Kitsap Rescue Mission Embodies Together It's Possible
As you may know, here at Kitsap Credit Union, we believe that together it’s possible. To us, this means many things—whether it’s helping you build your first budget or open your first savings account, donating our time at community events and local food banks, or supporting our members and community in countless other ways.
The Kitsap Rescue Mission is a like-minded organization that embodies the idea of “Together it’s Possible.” Established in Bremerton in 2009 as a mobile mission serving meals to community members in need, Kitsap Rescue Mission has since grown to provide hygiene products and meals to over 3,400 individuals. They have also incorporated housing services, onsite behavioral health intervention and treatment, substance use disorder assessments and counseling, medical and dental care, children’s activities, and comprehensive case management.
Now, Kitsap Rescue Mission is excited to announce a permanent housing program for 12 low-income women coming in 2025, “We are excited to share about a new Kitsap Rescue Mission Ministry that will provide a “Forever Home,” a permanent housing program for 12 low-income and no-income women with multiple barriers who would otherwise have no options,” said Audrey Wolf, Kitsap Rescue Mission Development Director. “This large home is located in Port Orchard and will undergo renovation beginning in early 2025.”
“Kitsap Rescue Mission’s intention is to identify our community’s most vulnerable individuals and families and provide them with an opportunity and the support they need to transition and heal from their current conditions into a life where they will flourish,” said Audrey.
With a move to the Pacific Building in Port Orchard planned for December 2024, Kitsap Rescue Mission will continue working toward just that. The new space will feature 75 enhanced emergency shelter beds, in addition to the innovative services they currently offer at their Bremerton location at the Quality Inn, which has a capacity for 110 individuals. Unique to the Port Orchard location will be shelter for guests and their beloved pets. There will be space for up to 10 dogs and eight cats.
While it’s easy to see how impactful Kitsap Rescue Mission’s work is for our community, it is truly remarkable the breadth and depth of services they offer to their guests to set them up for success. “We are the only shelter to offer wrap-around services onsite for our guests,” said Audrey. “These services include behavioral health assessment and therapies, medical and dental services, and case management and housing navigation services to assist guests in becoming stable and self-sufficient. As they arrive, a housing stability plan is developed, and our compassionate staff collaborate with the guests to help them reach their goals. Once they achieve self-sufficiency and permanent housing, our case managers continue to support them for up to 45 days, ensuring the transition is smooth.”
She further explained, “We serve our most vulnerable unhoused community members. There are complex reasons why a person may experience homelessness, and our goals are to provide safety and support, to mitigate further trauma, and to help our guests become internally motivated for change. Our safety net of support interfaces with multiple nonprofit organizations, as well as for profit organizations. We truly are creating a large community on the Kitsap Peninsula that cares for those experiencing homelessness.”
“At Kitsap Credit Union, you say that “Together it’s Possible.” Kitsap Rescue Mission completely agrees with this statement,” Audrey said. “We, the people of Kitsap, are a community who help one another, and lift each other to be the best that we can be.”
