How do credit unions differ from banks?
The biggest difference is that credit unions are not for profit. We are owned by and operated for our member-owners, those who have accounts at the credit union, and that’s why we make decisions based on what’s best for the membership.
Kitsap Credit Union was founded on the principles of people helping people. In addition to providing the products and services you need, we believe in helping people achieve more financially, socially, and as a community. As a local co-op, dollars you deposit, and loans you repay, directly benefit the local community.
For additional details about choosing a credit union, check out the video below.
-
How do you invest in the community?
We take great pride in the communities we serve and actively give back in a number of ways.
We reach thousands of young adults with financial education classes each year through partnerships with various community organizations and local high schools. We also provide monetary support to local community projects such as the Great Kitsap Give, local Habitat for Humanity Chapters, area food banks, and many more nonprofit and civic organizations.
To see what we're up to, visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/kitsapcreditunion/

How is a credit union governed?
Much like the FDIC governs what happens at a bank, NCUA is the federal regulator for Kitsap Credit Union and oversees the management of the federal deposit insurance fund.
On the local level, Kitsap Credit Union is governed by its Board of Directors, who serve and represent the best interest of the members. Every member, regardless of the amount in their account, can cast a vote to elect the credit union’s board members.

- Perform regular backup of data stored in devices. That way if you ever need to wipe your device because of suspected malware or ransomware, you’ll be able to restart your device with the information you saved on your backup.
- If your device doesn’t have a fingerprint lock feature, it’s best to use a passcode that is at least 8 characters, with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Never use your birthdate, Social Security Number, address, or other commonly used identifiers. This only makes it easier for cyber-criminals to attempt hacking your device. And NEVER share your passwords with anyone.
- Change online and mobile banking passwords frequently; we recommend every 60 to 90 days.
- Never view or share personal information over a public Wi-Fi network, such as those available in a coffee shop, or public transportation.

What are some Apple Pay® Security Features and Tips?
Apple Pay® lets you make purchases at participating merchants with virtual cards on your iPhone® and Apple Watch®.
It’s simple to get started:
- Add your Kitsap Credit Union debit and credit cards to the Wallet app on your iPhone®.
- Pay by holding your iPhone® or Apple Watch® near the reader at participating merchants.
Security Features:
Apple Pay® requires every transaction on your iPhone® to be authenticated with Touch ID® or your passcode. Your Apple Watch® is protected by your passcode. When you pay in stores, a unique secure token is provided instead of your actual card number.
Here are a few tips to help you protect your Apple devices and financial accounts:
- Turn on iCloud® to use Find My iPhone® on your iPhone®, or Apple Watch® . This will allow you to suspend Apple Pay® by placing your device in Lost Mode using Find My iPhone®. You can also erase the device remotely to prevent anyone else from accessing the data on your missing device. Visit Apple’s Website for more information about lost devices.
- Update your device operating system when updates are available. This will ensure your device has the latest releases to ensure your phone’s security features are up to date.
- Install an antivirus app and keep it updated. Consider consulting with your device manufacturer or technology blogs for recommendations on the best antivirus options.
- Avoid installing apps from third-party websites or unreliable sources. Best practice is to install apps only from the AppleApp Store®. Read the permissions requested by every application before installing it to ensure you understand what information will be accessed and how.
- Perform regular backup of data stored in devices. That way if you ever need to wipe your device because of suspected malware or ransomware, you’ll be able to restart your device with the information you saved on your backup.
- The best practice for your Apple® device is to use Touch ID® if your device has it. Touch ID® takes the place of a passcode you select to secure access to your device. For more information about Apple’s Touch ID®, click here.
- If your device doesn’t include Touch ID® or you prefer to use a passcode, it’s best to use at least 8 characters, with a combination of letters, numbers, and special characters. Never use your birth date, Social Security Number, address, or other commonly used identifiers. This only makes it easier for cyber-criminals to attempt hacking your device. What's the difference between a debit card and an ATM card?
A debit card is linked to your checking account and draws from the available money within the linked account. When you use your debit card, funds are immediately withdrawn.
An ATM card can only be used at an ATM terminal to withdraw or deposit money. On rare occasions, certain merchants may accept ATM transactions.
Kitsap Credit Union only currently offers debit cards with the VISA logo.

3. Description of Services
With the External Loan Payment Service, you may draft a checking account, savings account, or money market checking account from another financial institution to pay a Kitsap Credit Union loan. Any member authorized to view loan accounts using the Online Banking system is eligible for this service.
-
4. Transaction Limits
We have the right, at any time, to set dollar limits on daily and monthly transactions. If you try to initiate a payment over these limits, the system will not allow you to continue. Paying more than the regular payment may not advance your due date into the future, but it will reduce your balance. Kitsap Credit Union reserves the right to delay the posting of any item for any reason outside of this standard timeframe, most notably if a transaction is suspected to be fraudulent or unauthorized. Mortgage payments cannot be made using this service. An Automated Clearing House (ACH) payment can only be processed using a checking, savings, or money market account from another financial institution. Debit card payments are not allowed.

You can submit payments to the following loan types: Auto Loan, Line of Credit, Credit Card, Personal Loan, and Home Equity.
-
6. Recurring Items.
When you request a recurring payment, the initial amount set will remain a static amount. The Service will not read a minimum payment in subsequent months. It is your responsibility to monitor your minimum monthly payment requirements, cancel recurring payments when they are no longer desired, or a loan has been paid in full. Kitsap Credit Union is under no obligation to place a stop on these payments.
-
7. Requirements
Each transaction must have a valid routing number and full account number when submitting the payment. We offer the External Loan Payment Service as an added convenience to you. We have the right to terminate this agreement with no prior written notice. We may terminate this agreement based on but not limited to: Non-Sufficient Funds (NSF) items or receiving returned items via the Federal Reserve Bank.
-

You must inform us immediately of such items as, but not limited to: your Online Banking credentials may have been compromised, any unauthorized or fraudulent items posted to your loan accounts. To report such instances, please contact Kitsap Credit Union at 800-422-5852. You agree to provide us with any financial information we reasonably request during the term of this Agreement, however, Kitsap Credit Union will never text, email, or call you requesting your Online Banking password or security verification codes. You authorize us to review your history, as necessary.

Kitsap Credit Union reserves the right, at our sole and absolute discretion, to reject any payment for External Loan Payments into your loan account. We will notify you of rejected payments by mail.
-
11. Returned Payments.
Any credit to your loan account is provisional. If the original payment is dishonored, rejected, or otherwise returned by the receiving financial institution for payment or are rejected or returned by any commitment for the collecting financial institution that is obtaining the draft payment, for any reason, including, but not limited to, issues relating to debiting funds, you agree that the provisional credit to the loan account will be reversed. What is the difference between a Credit Card and a Debit Card?
A debit card is linked to your checking account and draws from the available money within the linked account. When you use your debit card, funds are immediately withdrawn.
A credit card allows you to borrow money from a limited line of credit offered by a financial institution. Each month you will receive a statement specifying your purchase amounts and details, as well as the minimum payment due. If you do not pay off your credit card in full each month you will be charged interest on the money you owe.

Look no further! Whether your priority is simplicity, cashback, or special perks, you'll find a card with fewer fees, a competitive rate, and the backing of Visa. It’s best to always reference your available balance to avoid Non-Sufficient Funds or Courtesy Pay Fees. These fees are listed on our current Rate & Fee Schedule.
Protect yourself from excessive fees with Overdraft Protection

How much will it cost me to refinance my first mortgage?
Every refinance will be different and once you submit an application you will receive a Loan Estimate form that will breakdown the costs for your situation but a good rule of thumb is about 2-3% of the loan amount you are borrowing.

I'm refinancing my home and I need a subordination letter for my home equity loan. How do I get one?
Requests for subordination usually come from the mortgage company you are working with. You will need to provide them with a letter, signed by you, requesting the subordination. This will allow us to work directly with the mortgage company for the letter. The fax number to send the request to is 360-307-2100.
-
What are my closing costs for my mortgage?
The specific amount of your closing costs will vary depending on your specific situation but costs generally fall into three categories: third party fees, taxes and other unavoidable costs, and lender fees.
Third Party Fees include:
- Appraisal fee
- Credit report fee
- Settlement / closing fee
- Survey fee
- Tax service fee
- Title insurance fee
- Flood certification fees
- Courier / mailing / notary fees
We collect any third-party fees and pass them on to the person who performed the service. For example, an appraiser is paid the appraisal fee, a credit bureau is paid the credit report fee, and a title company is paid the title insurance fees.
Taxes and other unavoidable costs include:
- State/Local Taxes and
- Recording fees
These fees will most likely have to be paid regardless of the lender you choose. If some lenders don't quote you fees that include taxes and other unavoidable fees, don't assume that you won't have to pay it. It probably means that the lender hasn't done the research necessary to provide accurate closing costs.
Lender fees may include:
- Points
- Document preparation fees
- Loan processing fees
These fees are retained by the lender and are used to provide you with the lowest rates possible. This is the category of fees that you should compare very closely from lender to lender before making a decision.

What is a Mortgage Loan?
A mortgage is a loan to finance the purchase of your home.
Your home is collateral for the loan, which is also a legal contract you sign to promise that you'll pay the debt, with interest and other costs, typically over 15 to 30 years.
If you don't pay the debt, the lender has the right to take back the property and sell it to cover the debt. To repay the debt, you make monthly installments or payments that typically include the principal, interest, taxes and insurance, together known as PITI.

What is a Mortgage Note?
A mortgage note, sometimes called a real estate lien note, is a signed legal document that states the signer will repay the amount that has been loaned, plus any interest that accrues during a specified amount of time at a predetermined interest rate.
When you take out a loan to purchase the home, you will need to sign the mortgage (deed of trust) as well as this promissory note. The promissory note contains the terms of loan repayment, while the deed is released to you upon completion of payment.

What is an escrow account?
An escrow account is established as a convenient way to manage property taxes and insurance for your home. Sometimes referred to as an "impound account", escrow accounts allow you to make one monthly payment, instead of paying individual bills when they are due.
A portion of your monthly mortgage payment goes directly to your mortgage (principal and interest) and the remainder is allocated to your escrow account to cover property taxes and insurance. When the individual bills are due, your lender will pay them with funds from your escrow account.

It helps identify an appropriate budget for the value of the home you are shopping for. It also shows sellers you are a serious buyer in the negotiation process.

What is Skip-A-Pay?
Skip-A-Pay is a program that allows you to delay a loan payment for a month, for any reason. For a fee, on your eligible consumer loan, you can skip a payment* when requirements are met.
*Opting to do a Skip-A-Pay will not affect your credit rating and simply adds the payment to the end of your loan term – for example, it will make a 60-month loan a 61-month loan.
Please note: Interest will continue to accrue during the period of no payment. Finance charges begin to accrue immediately and are repaid over the life of the loan. As a result, you may pay higher total finance charges on the loan than if payments were made within the original term agreement.
Please also note: Home Equities and Home Equity Lines of Credit (HELOC) are not eligible for Skip-A-Pay.
Loans eligible for Skip-A-Pay include:
- Vehicle loans (Including boat, RV, motorcycles and other vehicle types.)
- Personal loans (including Signature, Shared Secured, Purchase Money loans, and Visas.)
To take advantage of a Skip-A-Pay for your loan, you would need to meet the qualifications below and have the funds in your account for the fee.
To be eligible to skip a loan payment, you must:
- Be in good standing with the Credit Union.
- Have made at least six (6) payments on the loan.
- Not be outside of 15 day grace period for the eligible loan.
- Not currently be involved in any Bankruptcy proceedings.
- Not have any unpaid charge offs on the account.
- Not have any skipped or deferred payments in the last six-months.
- Not have any real estate loans with escrow.
You can check in Online or Mobile banking app to see if you’re eligible:
- Online Banking – click on “Additional Services” and then select “Skip-a-Pay”, or use the Skip-a-Pay widget directly on your accounts home page.
- Mobile Banking - click on the 'More' menu, and select "Skip-a-Pay".
If you have any questions, you can contact us!
-
Why did insurance get added onto my loan causing my payment to increase when I already have insurance?
All vehicle loans at Kitsap Credit Union require insurance. In the event where we may not have received your insurance information, or your insurance is not sufficient based on the terms of your loan agreement we will add Collateral Protection Insurance (CPI) to the account. This will happen if we have not received a response from the notification letters we send.
Here's how to fix it:
- Ensure your insurance policy lists Kitsap Credit Union as Lienholder/Loss Payee with the address of PO BOX 58790 Tukwila, WA 98318. (This address is for insurance purposes only.)
- Ensure your insurance policy includes Comprehensive and Collision coverage with deductibles not to exceed $1000.00.
- Contact us or have your insurance agent submit your information to www.myinsuranceinfo.com or call (800)-998-0763 with the Kitsap Credit Union.
